Iowa Caucus: Why do so few people participate? — Posted by Catherine Morgan
As an onlooker to the media hoopla surrounding the Iowa caucus, I have a hard time understanding why such a small percentage of Iowa voters will actually participate.
If you lived in Iowa, it would seem like such a great opportunity to get to know the candidates and their positions on the issues. I don’t know about you? But from my living-room, it looks like the candidates are willing to do back-flips to get these people to come out and caucus, and yet only a fraction actually will. Why is that? Could it be that there are this many people so disenchanted with politics that they just don’t care? Well, it turns out it’s much more complicated than that…It seems in many cases, the Iowa caucuses are actually discouraging participation.
