Ann Coulter’s Hateful Attack on Elizabeth Edwards Today on HardBall…More like SoftBall today.
AN UPDATE FROM ELIZABETH EDWARDS…
It is the end of the fund-raising quarter (perhaps you have heard?), and I was traveling in the Pacific Northwest when I heard Coulter was going to be on Hardball. I thought back to all her targets in the past: Ambassador Pamela Harriman, during Harriman’s memorial service, the brave 9/11 widow Kristen Breitweiser and the rest of the Jersey Girls who forced the formation of the 9/11 Commission, and, of course, the day before, John – again. I thought to myself: this has to stop. So I decided to listen and to call in if she continued her personal attacks and ask her to engage on the issues and stop using language of hate in place of political dialogue.
I was sitting in the airport in Portland while I watched Chris Matthews interview Ann Coulter on MSNBC. It wasn’t surprising, but time and again she chose to answer serious questions with hate-filled personal attacks and factual misstatements. And so I called the Hardball number I had asked the campaign earlier in the day to get for me.
In the South, when someone does something that displeases us we politely ask them to stop. I had done it before to some rude college boys in South Carolina in 2003. They responded politely and stopped. So that is what I asked of Coulter last night. She is 45, so I had hoped for at least as civil a response as I had gotten from 19-year-old college boys. I was wrong. — read her full blog post

Elizabeth Edwards called in to HardBall today during an interview with Ann Coulter. Elizabeth Edwards was trying to calmly ask Ann to not continue hateful personal attacks on individuals. Pointing out that the same young men and women standing behind her and applauding all the hateful things she is saying, are being done a disservice by her behavior. Not surprisingly, Ann Coulter was a loud, rude, and obnoxious brat towards a mature, respectable, and soft-spoken Elizabeth Edwards. I for one would have liked to have heard what Elizabeth Edwards had to say, without listening to Ann Coulter’s hysterics and rantings attempting to overpower Elizabeth’s opportunity ask a question. I don’t normally say stuff like this (but I’m really mad)…Chris Mathews was a total wimp…He let Ann Coulter walk all over him. He really shouldn’t even be allowed to call his show HardBall. Maybe the show should be called NoBall.
I think it was a courageous move on the part of Elizabeth Edwards, she must have known Ann Coulter would behave just as she did…like a spoiled brat. But Elizabeth held her ground and tried in vain to make her point to Ann Coulter. I sure hope I will be able to find something about this from Elizabeth Edwards, I really want to know what she was trying to say.
Personally it makes me so angry when Ann Coulter has the nerve to call ALL liberals Godless, that in an of itself is so disrespectful…not even mentioning all the other horrifying hate speech that comes out of her mouth. It’s really very sad when you think about it.
In debate over Barack Obama’s claim that the religious right has hijacked faith and used it to drive Americans apart, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity used it to attack Obama.
It seems the only thing Ann Coulter cares about is selling books (and she has stated that many times herself). It’s really a sad commentary on the people who would actually buy this book, do they really think God condones this kind of hateful behavior? I wish some of these commentators that only gently point out her disrespect would speak up, and call her on it. It seems she scares these interviewers into letting her spout off things that no other person could ever get away with. I wish just one time someone, somewhere, would put her in her place. I’m all for strong women, but she is really giving strong women everywhere a bad name.

From an article on Editor & Publisher
NEW YORK During an appearance by columnist Ann Coulter on Chris Matthews’ MSNBC program “Hardball” today, Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Sen. John Edwards, phoned in to ask Coulter to turn away from attacking individuals and using the language of “hate.”
Coulter laughed it off and told Edwards that she was just trying to silence her, or even stop writing books. She then attacked her husband for making doing “shyster Las Vegas routine” in front of juries when he was a attorney that won huge damage claims against doctors, “bankrupting” them which meant they could “no longer deliver babies…. Don’t talk to me about how to use language.”
Edwards again asked her to not use hate language: “I’m going to politely ask you again to stop using personal attacks as part of your dialogue.” Coulter said Edwards was just the wife of a candidate for president trying to defend her husband. “Stop raising money on your Web site,” Coulter said.
“Why isn’t John Edwards making this call?” Coulter asked.
Edwards asked Coulter why she had lied and said that her husband had a bumper sticker on his car that read, “Ask me about my dead son.” Coulter replied: “That was three years ago.” Edwards: “I’m the mother of the boy that died.” — read full article

From Taylor Marsh at The Huffington Post
Elizabeth Edwards made the right-wing slander merchant squirm.
But ABC joined in yesterday, helping Ann Coulter sell her paperback book, as she slimed Edwards during her performance, which is part of what inspired Elizabeth Edwards to call in.
That’s nothing. Did you see what happened on “Hannity & Colmes” last night? Coulter equated Obama to being a terrorist.
That’s Fox “News,” MSNBC and “Hardball,” plus ABC all helping Coulter sell books, while she slimes Democratic candidates for president. You can’t pay for media coverage like that. But spreading hate speech at the same time? That’s the Coulter smear machine in action.
That’s some “liberal media” we’ve got, isn’t it, folks? — read full post

I suggest if she wants to “write”, that she sign on as a journalist embedded with the troops in Iraq for a year. Her opinions aren’t worth a second thought, and although a narcissist could never admit it, she has become a humorless joke to the vast majority of people everywhere. Time for a Paris Hilton image makeover! Do SOMETHING relevant with your life!! And here’s a thought: a “christian” person would not engage in cheap personal attacks to feed his/her worship of money, and self.

Are you really criticizing Ann Coulter’s “hysterics” when that is the main component of your response to the situation? Elizabeth Edwards who always seemed nice enough made a fool of herself today on Hardball. If she were really so hurt and outraged she wouldn’t step into the fray by calling in or soliciting campaign contributions based on Coulter’s comments. Why dignify her if she Elizabeth Edwards finds it so reprehensible?

Re: Ann Coulter on today’s “Hardball”
Dear John,
I haven’t seen Ms. Coulter for about a year. In that year’s time, Ms. Coulter has become even more angry. I did see a segment of “Hardball” today, and Ms. Coulter is at a point of irrationality, given her anger. Consider the source when assessing the condition of Ms. Coulter’s bad attitude. Of course, she is going to continue to throw bombs. That is what she does.
In stark contrast, Elizabeth Edwards is a well-rounded, mature, very intelligent, real person. Elizabeth also has children. She has a very different life than Ms. Coulter.
Ann Coulter on the other hand, seems compelled to try to tell other people how to think, which is never going to work out in a democracy. Especially teachers know that opening up subject matter in a more socratic way, ususally invites participation and concensus.
Loud, angry, name calling doesn’t do any good at all. Personal attacks are useless. Attacks on our future presiden’t legs is also quite useless. Attacks on Senator Obama is just plain laughable.Lesson # 1: Don’t follow President Cheneybush into an irrational war in Iraq. (I knew when so many of our then students left for the Iraq area that we were going to be invading Iraq. I knew then it was a mistake. It wasn’t difficult to see that.)
We are now in Iraq, so we have to find a way to pull back and try to bring the Iraqi factions together. Now, Al Queda has moved into Iraq, so we have the burden of rebuilding our miliatary, so that we have the numbers of troops available to win any future military attacks in the future.
But let us also concentrate on getting Bin Laden. (Bin Laden is credited with planning 911.)
I’m just an artist, not a politician. But let’s try some creativity. Even Ms. Coulter shirley must have to resort to that from time to time. But I must say that Ms. Coulter’s histrionics are like a barometer of her frustration. Just don’t take that kind of provocation seriously.
Sincerely,
Jane -

Typical liberal response: Attack Ann Coulter for being an attractive, young Chrisitan woman. How very mature of you.

I am a Republican but have to say as a person, Ann is quite the “C”-word.

Chris/MSNBC, you just lost me for one. I am completely and totally disgusted. Your show has sunken to a new low by providing this person with a platform to sell books by spewing such venomous & juvenile comments on such serious topics. I thought you ran a serious political show not a Jerry Springer circus? Consider me a former viewer and a former patron of your sponsors.

Jane,
I too agree that the personal attacks made by Coulter do very little to further political dialogue. Nonetheless, why should she stop? People continue to buy her books, invite her on talk shows, read her columns, etc. I don’t think we can fault her when there is a demand for her style of commentary. Mrs. Edwards should have just stayed above the fray. By calling into Hardball and soliciting campaign donations based on Ms. Coulter’s comments she only adds fuel to the fire and in a most opportunistic way. I am sure that Mrs. Edwards is a great person, but that does not mean she can’t see dollar signs and publicity as well as Ann Coulter.

I almost feel as if I am just adding up publicity for Ann Coulter. I do wonder about Chris Matthews…why on earth would he have her on his show? Because his ratings will go up? I might still listen to Hardball, but my heart won’t be in it as much. I just ask as did the woman in the beef commercial, Ann, where’s the religion in your conservative right wing act? Can you honestly believe God would be proud of the way you talk and act?

I caught a piece of it on my way in today. Frankly she sounded like a woman who needs some serious help.
Something ugly is brewing inside of this woman, and whether she is just taking advantage of those almost as ugly as she in order to sell her books, or whether she is truly crazy, she needs to be ignored.
The attention she craves comes from everyone hating her. When no one is talking about her she goes and gets even nastier and crazier than before.

I for one would like to compliment Elizabeth Edwards for her call in on the Chris Mathews show, “Hard Ball.” As usual transgender Ann acted like a total fool. It thinks attacking people is somehow cute. I can’t stomach watching this rag in drag and hearing its childish insults. It claims to be a christian? Not hardly! In fact if this clown is what a christian should be and act like I’d just as soon sign on as a sinner. I for one have never been one to wish ill on a person and I don’t think I will now other then to say if a piano dropped from a window and landed on that boney frame I’d throw the first party. Maybe good old Ann the man needs to write a book entitled, “How to talk to a transgender…if you have to.” That way we all might be able to understand it better.

Mark, do you fail to see the total hypocrisy in your post. You words are as insulting, cruel, and unnecessary as you claim her words are.

It’s a shame and an insult to the transgender community that Ann Coulter, nee ‘Adam Colt,’is the main spokesperson for the extreme right in this country. Prior to his sex reassignment, I understand he was not quite as invective. What’s even more of a shame is that there are people who read her crap and revere her for it. Very sad! And, she is as ugly as sin.

I see this blog as being suspect. Almost everybody on here keeps trying to be clever by pretending that brave, beautiful women like Coulter must have some kind of a sexual or psychological problem for not going along with whiny Edwards. If Ms. Edwards is so concerned about personal attacks then she should not spend the money her husband made attacking doctors legally as Ann said. And by the way, why are all the liberals not getting on to Bill Maher and Letterman for their endless personal attacks? Or how about getting onto Streisand for pushing for more abortions? That is an attack against the unborn?

I’m a hugh fan of Ann Coulter. And it’s not just because I’m a Univ of Mich grad. She is so rock hard smart and doesn’t feel any need to be ‘popular’. So she sells some books…that’s freedom/democracy/capatilism and we don’t want to lose that choice.
I don’t know what she has to say about Miss California. I am a conservative, could care less if 2 same sex people want to marry, start a family..whatever. BUT…………. I care that people want to silence Miss California. It all starts REAL small…can’t express yourself…and it grows and grows.
We MUST be so careful to not lose our freedom of speech. Look at the lives of women in Afganstan, Iran, Saudi Arabia……………….you start with Miss California and those that try and silence her. We have to be able to let people express their views EVEN if we don’t agree with their views.
But back to Ann, can you imagine what life must have been like for her when she was in Ann Arbor? I would have loved to see her then at UM LAW…probably the only conservative in the class. Unfortunately, the school would never have the courage to have her as a commencement speaker…they would have Hugo Chavez, a child molester or Bernie Madoff first. tfs

Liberals hate strong women like Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin while they praise haters of america such as Boxer, Pelosi and the freaks on The View.
