Whether you agreed with Cindy Sheehan or not, it is very sad that she has been beaten down the way she has. But Cindy showed all women that any of us can have a voice, and have our voice heard. I think that is a very important message. Only time will tell if women got this message, or instead got the message to keep their mouth shut. I for one hope we see more Cindy Sheehans. — read full post
BE AFRAID, BE VERY VERY AFRAID. - Also know as the GOP Election Slogan.

This is the most infuriating thing I have heard, even more infuriating than the Democrats giving into Bush on the war. Fear, fear, fear. We must all live in fear - At least until the next presidential election. Because everyone knows the Republicans are the only ones that can protect America. Isn’t it funny how conveniently timed these threats and terror alerts are? Get your duct tape and gas masks ready, we are in for a long election season.
The question is not whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid flinched in their negotiations with the Bush administration over the continuation of the Iraq occupation.
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Veteran Democratic congressman Tom Lantos (news, bio, voting record) on Tuesday took aim at the Bush administration for “serious misconduct” in its “abysmal” attempt to rebuild violence-shattered Iraq.
Lantos, chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs committee, accused top US officials of wallowing in the “mud of incompetence” and said they were guilty of “stunning mismanagement” in post-war Iraq. – read full article
WASHINGTON - The top Republican on the Senate committee investigating Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he believes Gonzales could step down before a no-confidence vote sought this week by Senate Democrats. . . . . read more
Specter and other senators said they were particularly troubled by testimony last week that Gonzales, when he was Bush’s White House counsel, pressured then-Attorney General John Ashcroft to certify the legality of Bush’s controversial eavesdropping program while Ashcroft was in intensive care.
Compounding the horror, the body of one of the soldiers killed in the ambush in which the soldiers were captured was so badly burned the Pentagon hasn’t been able to identify him — and so isn’t sure which of the four soldiers listed as “duty status whereabouts unknown” is dead, and which of the four are in the hands of al-Qaeda. — read full post
Speaking on the Senate floor this morning in support of his amendment to bring the war to an end, Sen. Russ Feingold said: “Mr. President, as we speak, more than 150,000 brave American troops are in the middle of a violent civil war in Iraq, with more troops on the way.” — read full post
DOD Blocking Internet Use — Don’t our troops deserve to have the same freedoms they are fighting for?
Starting Monday, the Defense Department will block access to MySpace, YouTube and a host of other sites on official department computers worldwide, in an effort to boost its network efficiency.
Defense officials said the move is solely a reaction to the heavy drain the streaming video and audio can put on the defense computer network. — read full article
If it is only because of a “drain on the system” - Don’t the troops deserve to have a network set up separately in order to not take away an important freedom and outlet they have had?
In a message to troops from U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. B.B. Bell on Friday, he acknowledged many of the sites being blocked are used by troops to keep in touch with family and friends.
Why is it o.k. for the the military to use these restricted sites to promote the agenda of the military, but not o.k. for the troops to use these same sites to stay in touch with their family and friends?
Ironically, the Defense Department this year had just begun expanding its own use of YouTube to reach a younger, broader audience and show clips of U.S. troops in action. — read full article
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mothers in the U.S. military are stressed, poorly paid and need more help caring for their children, according to a report issued by Congress on Friday.
Nearly half of all women in the active-duty military have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, and 24,475 women are there now, the report by the Joint Economic Committee said.
Yet child care services are not keeping up with longer and more frequent deployments, said the report, released to coincide with Mothers’ Day in the United States on Sunday.
Moreover, women get only 6 weeks of leave after the birth of a child, it found. — read full article

Nevertheless, a new Washington politician raising nearly $59 million is impressive.
PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Thanks for coming. (Applause.) Please be seated, unless, of course, you don’t have a chair. (Laughter.) I’m glad you’re here. And I’m glad I’m here with you, and I thank you. (Applause.) Thanks for coming, thanks for supporting the Republican Party. Here’s our mission: Our mission is to keep the White House in 2008, and retake the Senate and the House. (Applause.) And you’re helping, and you’re helping a lot, and I really appreciate it.
I appreciate my friend, Senator Mel Martinez for being the General Chairman of the Republican National Committee. You know, I believe — I believe that he is the first RNC Chairman to speak English as a second language. (Laughter.) Some people think I’m the first President who can make the same claim. (Laughter.)
The president put a positive spin on the night, saying donors would help return Washington to domination by the GOP, both in the White House and on Capitol Hill.
The Republican National Committee’s spring fundraising gala hosted by the president raised $17 million last year, $15 million in 2005 and $14 million in 2003. When Bush was seeking re-election to the White House in 2004, the dinner brought in a record $38.5 million.

Gasoline prices have topped $3 a gallon at service stations across the country because several oil refineries are off-line due to maintenance or accidents, reducing gasoline production and making fuel supplies tight.
“It’s outrageous …Isn’t it interesting every year about this time, a refinery goes down for repairs,” said Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
“Is that coincidental? Or is it part of a plan that these multinational, huge companies who are making obscene profits in the tens of billions of dollars — is this part of their game to keep the profits going?” Reid said. — see full article

Cheney spent most of the day at the U.S. Embassy inside the heavily protected Green Zone in central Baghdad. He was in the building when an explosion rattled windows and prompted officials to move reporters accompanying Cheney to the basement for several minutes. Witnesses said a mortar or rocket appeared to have been fired from the mostly Shiite areas on the east side of the Tigris River toward the Green Zone.
The vice president, at a news conference a half hour later, did not mention the blast. He had been wearing an armor-plated vest when he got off his plane at the airport. — read full article

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush’s approval rating has fallen to 28 percent in a Newsweek Poll released on Saturday, an all-time low for Bush in that survey.
Nearly two out of three Americans — 62 percent — believe Bush’s recent actions in Iraq show he is “stubborn and unwilling to admit his mistakes,” Newsweek reported. Just 30 percent think Bush’s execution of the Iraq war demonstrates he is “willing to take political risks” to do what’s right. — read full article
