  1. I hope you found this information helpful. Please leave me your comments.

Also, I know there are many more informative sites out there on global warming. If you know of one that I should include on this post, please let me know. Thank you.

    Hi Catherine,
    tamino’s blog is
Open Mind—not “One Mind”, which has quite a different meaning—and his blog comments are not “scientific” but scientific. The quote marks you used imply that he may not be a scientist, but he is, and tamino has been helpful to me as I attempt to answer middle school students’ questions on climate change.

  3. Thanks for pointing that out “Inel” — I’ll make the change.

Thanks. I know your focus is on the voting public, but you might find this link worth investigating. It’s from the generation who are too young to vote now, but will be voting next time round, and they are rising to the climate challenge starting tomorrow (January 29th):

I know that people want to get all in a dither about global warming, but if one truly looks at the “evidence”, one can only come to the conclusion that there is no such thing. In the history of the world, the globe has been expanding and contracting giant ice floes, and this is simply another example of the cycle. Please, look at something other than the left wing propaganda and arm yourself with knowledge before you decide.

  7. “Kelly L” — With all due respect, I have included both sides of this issue in the links above, as well as in the comments on each of the posts. I don’t have to do that….but I think it is important to not be one-sided and let people come to their own concussions on all the issues. I would encourage you to click on each of the links above, take some time to read them, and then base your opinion on all the facts.

    Thank you for your comment.

we have just 10 years to save the world, warn the scientists.
To reverse surging greenhouse gas emissions or risk runaway climate change that could make many parts of the planet uninhabitable.
The stark warning comes from scientists who are working on a report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control.
About the half 24 billion tons of carbon dioxide generated by human activities each year absorbed by forests and oceans- a process without which the world might already be several degrees warmer.

Catherine, I want to thank you for including comments from those of us who aren’t buying into this hysteria. It’s your site and you are under no obligation to do so. It’s refreshing to see you’re serious about letting both sides speak. Thanks for the links as well.

  12. Hi “Chris In Canada” — You are very welcome. I hope you will keep coming back, and keep commenting. All views are welcome. You never know, we could end up agreeing on one or two things.

I posted a critical review and essay on the global warming-themed film, “An Inconvenient Truth”, starring Al Gore Jr. a few weeks back: Do several convenient half-truths make “An Inconvenient Truth”? on Scanlyze .

  14. “Scanlyze” — Thank you for your comment, I checked out your review and it was very interesting. However, I would still recommend people see the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”.

No matter the cause, the billions of tons of pollution that we pour into the air every day have to have some effect on the enviroment. We are quickly making this planet uninhabitable and I see no major changes in the near future. Perhaps we should prepare for the eventual end of this world as we know it.

defeatism isn’t going to solve anything Mohayrix. There are plenty of solutions, it’s up to all of us to take them up, and make the poltical stance to get governments to change as well.

    Hi Catherine,

I think it is great that you are still raising awareness that global warming aka climate change is an issue that everyone needs to deal with. However, in your quote, posted Thursday, February 15th 2007:

“The effects of global warming are expected to increase in the next few decades— hotter days, higher sea levels, disappearing glaciers— and now scientists are more certain than ever that humans are causing it.” — Read report from ABC News The full report will be released on Friday.

you say “the full report will be released on Friday”, and refer to a pre-report news article.

“The full report” to which this ABC News article refers was actually released on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 in Paris. It is the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) by IPCC Working Group I (WGI). This particular report provides a summary of the current science on global warming. Voters need to be informed and also need to show policymakers that climate change matters to them—in that sense we are all policymakers!

This SPM by WGI is the first of a series of reports on climate change that will be released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this year (April, May and November 2007 in fact).

In terms of keeping voters informed, I think it would be helpful for them to be aware of this context as well as the timing of future reports which will summarise the expected consequences of global warming and the options for slowing down global warming.

To read just the IPCC summary sentences of the report you refer to, here is an excellent post by Darmok at Ancora Imparo for members of the public who may not have the time nor the inclination to read the IPCC’s full Summary for Policymakers, or for those who simply want a refresher of this particular SPM’s contents. A link to “the full report” is also provided, of course, by Darmok :-)

FWIW, I too posted a personal impression of An Inconvenient Truth some weeks ago.

In the sober, dense circles of the scientific primary literature (I am a scientist), it’s now pretty well accepted that the carbon dioxide levels we now see in our atmosphere are the result of human activities, and that the climate effects we now observe, unlike past episodes of planetary warming and cooling, can not be explained except in terms of that human-produced carbon dioxide. This point was still controversial at the time An Inconvenient Truth was made; it is far less so now.

What we still don’t know is what the total effect will be. The models we design to make those predictions are still missing many factors. Research where I work is trying to add one of those factors: sulfur compounds produced by algae that escape into the atmosphere and seed new clouds – clounds that reflect enough sunlight so that the planet is warming more slowly than would be predicted from carbon dioxide levels alone. That’s just one factor. There are many others. And that places the scientist in the uncomfortable position of risking the cry of “Wolf!” – to people who will take any excuse to ignore the warnings and keep driving their SUVs.

For, IMO, the problem is far less what government and industry are up to. They might “win” by obfuscating the argument. But no argument succeeds without an audience. And it just might be that the real problem, Pogo, is us. “A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest”, Mr. Simon.

hello! first of i’d like to say that the government tries to convince the public that global warmings a hoax because too much of our economy depends on the oil business and other things that dont exactly help the matter of global warming. The only somewhat good idea that tries to disprove global warming is the theory of tempurature cycles.

I can see how this one theory might be true. But the problem is, these cycles wont change for hundreds of thousands of years. Scientists estimate that we have about 10 years to make a difference or we are basically screwed. So we can wait, hoping that this tempurature cycle will end in 10 years, or do something about it during this generation, so our kids and grandkids wont have to deal with this problem, when its more serious (if our world lives for us to have kids and grandkids, scary thought, but serious one). While tempurature cycles are very likely, most scientists agree that atleast 80% of global wamring is because of carbon dioxide emissions. These come from organic compounds being broken down. (All fossil fuels are organic).

If not now, when? We will run out of fossil fuels eventually. They take millions of years to form, and we are using them up at a rapid speed. We might as well find some alternative, more environmentally friendly way to power us up, its not like the U.S. is poor and can’t afford the research.

I have done aLOT of research on global warming and am an aspiring chemical engineer. chemistry allows us to see that the nitrogen oxides we release from our cars (and other stuff that requires fossil fuels to burn) destroys the ozone layer. This is just one way that global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer can be proved. There are many other scientific ways i can prove global warming, but this message is long enough. I am 16 and i am taking the same science classes as my brother, who is a sophmore in college. I go to 3 summer camps every year that better my understanding of global warming. Don’t mean to brag, but i know my stuff, lol =]. Please take into consideration all that i have said, and spread the word about global warming.

  27. “Morgan” — Thanks for the informative comment, I agree with you 100%. I know there is a lot to be said about this topic, and I do link to several other blogs that focus on global warming. If you have a blog already, I would be happy to link to it. If you don’t have a blog you should really consider it…you can get a free blog at wordpress.com – it’s a great way to get your ideas out.

Thanks again for your comment, it was very informative. Keep up the great work.
