What Are We Going To Do About Iran??? Will We Eventually Need a DRAFT???

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 31, 2007

It seems more and more that Iran is becoming a large part of our problem in Iraq. What are we going to do? We are not exactly in a position, to take on another war? Is there going to have to be a draft? Is this war leading us to a “mandatory” military?

As a mother, these questions are very scary to me. I’m afraid, not of Iraq, or Iran, or even the terrorists. What scares me, is that my son or daughter may be sent to fight in a war, and possibly lose their life, because our government refuses to look at peaceful options to our foreign policy problems. Does anyone think, that even without involvement with Iran, our military can be sustained as an all volunteer program?

I’m not normally a conspiracy person, and maybe it is just that I am so overwhelmed with the thought of a draft. With that said, it seems to me that all along, this administration has ultimately wanted to shift our military from volunteer to mandatory. WHAT DO YOU THINK? These has been my feelings since reading this;

from THE PROJECT FOR THE NEW AMERICAN CENTURY — THE STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

June 3, 1997

American foreign and defense policy is adrift. Conservatives have criticized the incoherent policies of the Clinton Administration. They have also resisted isolationist impulses from within their own ranks. But conservatives have not confidently advanced a strategic vision of America’s role in the world. They have not set forth guiding principles for American foreign policy. They have allowed differences over tactics to obscure potential agreement on strategic objectives. And they have not fought for a defense budget that would maintain American security and advance American interests in the new century.

We aim to change this. We aim to make the case and rally support for American global leadership.

As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world’s preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?

We are in danger of squandering the opportunity and failing the challenge. We are living off the capital — both the military investments and the foreign policy achievements — built up by past administrations. Cuts in foreign affairs and defense spending, inattention to the tools of statecraft, and inconstant leadership are making it increasingly difficult to sustain American influence around the world. And the promise of short-term commercial benefits threatens to override strategic considerations. As a consequence, we are jeopardizing the nation’s ability to meet present threats and to deal with potentially greater challenges that lie ahead.

We seem to have forgotten the essential elements of the Reagan Administration’s success: a military that is strong and ready to meet both present and future challenges; a foreign policy that boldly and purposefully promotes American principles abroad; and national leadership that accepts the United States’ global responsibilities.

Of course, the United States must be prudent in how it exercises its power. But we cannot safely avoid the responsibilities of global leadership or the costs that are associated with its exercise. America has a vital role in maintaining peace and security in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. If we shirk our responsibilities, we invite challenges to our fundamental interests. The history of the 20th century should have taught us that it is important to shape circumstances before crises emerge, and to meet threats before they become dire. The history of this century should have taught us to embrace the cause of American leadership.

Our aim is to remind Americans of these lessons and to draw their consequences for today. Here are four consequences:

• we need to increase defense spending significantly if we are to carry out our global
responsibilities today and modernize our armed forces for the future;

• we need to strengthen our ties to democratic allies and to challenge regimes hostile to our interests and values;

• we need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad;

• we need to accept responsibility for America’s unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, our prosperity, and our principles.

Such a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity may not be fashionable today. But it is necessary if the United States is to build on the successes of this past century and to ensure our security and our greatness in the next.

Am I the only one that thinks this seems suspicious? Is this statement a conspiracy or is it real? Does anyone know more about this? Like I said, I am just a mom, I don’t know much about the military, I just know I don’t like war. This statement seems to imply that there was never going to be an attempt at peace. Was the goal of this statement to eventually institute a mandatory military? Is that what is ultimately going to happen? I would very much like to hear both sides of this issue. — Please be kind.

QUOTES ON TOLERANCE

For the record: Although I am against the idea of a draft or mandatory military, I also believe that it is not fair for the current voluntary military, to be used over the capacity that they originally signed on for….seems like that isn’t voluntary anymore….kind of a draft within the military.

BLOGGERS CHANGING THE FACE OF POLITICS AT GATHER.COM

BLOGGERS CHANGING THE FACE OF POLITICS — by Catherine Morgan

Finally, the voting public has somewhere else to turn to get the facts, and voice their opinions on politics. Now, we can all make a difference. Politicians will not be able to ignore the voices coming from the “cyber” community. As more and more people become frustrated with the “mainstream” media, and more and more of us have access to computers, the face of politics is going to see major changes. Just putting smear ads on television, as an attempt to manipulate the vote, is not going to be effective any more.

WE THE PEOPLE, are going to have more power, and more to say, and politicians are going to be held to their promises, or be OUT.

I just want to say thank you, to MSNBC, for their report on GATHER.COM. I for one, feel that maybe this will be a step in the right direction, in putting the people back into politics. I hope the readers of this post will check out the GATHER.COM site, and report back to me on what they think about it.

I look forward to hearing from everyone, as I am not able to really check this site out at the moment, because I am working on something else right now. Thanks for your help.

NEWSWEEK POLL — How Will History Judge George W. Bush?

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 28, 2007

New poll information from NEWSWEEK.

Most American’s believe history will judge President Bush poorly. What do you think?

HOW WILL HISTORY JUDGE GEORGE W. BUSH? — by Catherine Morgan

I find it interesting that when I hear the Bush administration defending their policies, especially the war in Iraq, they seem to defer to “history will be the judge”. What is that all about? I just don’t think that the; “let’s leave it up to history to judge” excuse, is a good enough reason to keep sending troops to Iraq. First are troops were fighting in Iraq because of 9/11, then weapons of mass destruction, then democracy, then terrorism, and now it seems like President Bush is having our troops continue fighting just for the sake of history “maybe” being able to make sense of the whole mess “someday”???

Why is it that the President seems more concerned with how the future will judge him, than he does with actually dealing with how his decisions affect us all right now? Isn’t history suppose to write itself? How can the President fulfill his duty to uphold the Constitution and be the leader of our country today, if he is only focused on how what he does now will effect the future? It just doesn’t seem right to me.

I would love to know how other people see this situation. Does it make sense to anyone? Does it seem right? And….How would you judge George W. Bush? Please send me your comments, I will post all that are written in a respectful manner. I know this is a heated topic, but one of my goals for this site is to show both sides that we can have meaningful debate without hating each other. If you think you are ready to do this….I would love to hear from you.

WATCH 20/20 “Waiting on the World to Change” — LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 26, 2007

WATCH 20/20 TONIGHT (if you missed the show you can see it at the 20/20 site) — THEN LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK — by Catherine

I hope you will all watch 20/20 tonight, when Dianne Sayer lives with an impoverished family in Camden, NJ. The show is titled “waiting on the world to change“.

I would really like to get feedback from any of you who watch this program tonight. All comments will be posted, as long as respectfully written.

The plight of the homeless and the working poor in this country, is a subject we don’t talk enough about, but that we need to talk about more. Not just talk, but take action as well, because millions of families in the United States of America are living as if they were in a third world country. This is not acceptable to me, as I am sure it is not acceptable to you.

Please watch the show, tell me what you think, and tell me what you would do if you were in a position to make a difference on this matter.

Also see my earlier post on the 744,000 million homeless in America. This is an extremely high number, especially considering we are the richest country in the world. The other sobering statistic is that 40% of the homeless in America are families.

HOW DO WE GET OUT OF IRAQ — How Would You Get Us Out?

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 25, 2007

HOW CAN WE GET OUT OF IRAQ? — by Catherine Morgan

As a woman and a mother, I admit….I am one of those “crazy” people who want to see peace in our country and in the world. I remember being a very young little girl during the Vietnam War. I would sometimes see the covers of magazines like “TIME” and “LIFE” with pictures of the dead and injured on them. At the time I was too young to have a war explained to me, I just new there was a war, and that people killed each-other in a war. With that small amount of understanding I was very confused to say the least. It was so sad to me, I remember thinking even then; Why is there war? How can men kill each-other like that? What could be worth killing for? As an adult now, and with a greater understanding of the world….I have to admit, my questions are still the same. I know I am putting myself out there to be chastised as being a crazy, left wing, tree-hugging, bleeding heart, liberal, nut case…..or some version of that theme. But I don’t believe in those narrow minded stereotypes, and I am willing to take the judgemental criticism of others who might want to “label” me. Although, I would ask that you don’t.

So, I’m going to go out on a limb and just say it. I am not of the mind-set that if we don’t fight “them” in Iraq, we will have to fight “them” here in our own backyards. And I don’t think that our collective-fear of possibly having another “9/11″, was or is enough justification to send our troops to fight in Iraq. I also think that the money, energy, technology, and man-power that we have squandered and are still squandering in Iraq should have been used in our own country to actually build an infrastructure capable of protecting us from any possible future attack.

With that said. I do not have any idea how we can begin to rectify this horrible mess and get our troops home. It seems to me that there are too many people profiting from this war. It also seems that, the people making the decisions, don’t really care how many people die before they figure out what they are going to do about it. I’m also confuses when these same people preach to us to “support” the war, because if we don’t that means we are “against” the troops and “for” the terrorists. Sometimes, I hear the President or someone from the administration talking….and I really think; When did not wanting anymore troops to be killed, become a terrorist action? Am I in the twilight zone? I know, I just opened myself up for the whole; If we could just put all these bleeding heart liberals in a space ship, and send them off to the twilight zone, maybe then we could win this ‘civil’ war on terror. Joking aside…..I really just don’t get it.

And that’s why I am putting the question out to you. Don’t judge me on my shortcomings as a military strategist. Just tell me…HOW DO WE GET OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ? CAN WE? If you were the “all powerful” decision maker, and you could do anything you wanted without asking the pesky congress or worrying about public opinion….What would you do? People must have some idea what they would do if they had the chance.

I know this is a “hot-button” issue, but I do want to hear all the different opinions and ideas, on both sides of the issue. And I will post all comments as long as they are not blatantly disrespectful. I tried to cover all the disrespectful things you might want to call me, so no sense in rehashing any of those labels. And who knows? Bush could actually be making his decisions by reading blogs just like his one. Maybe he will see your idea and change his whole Iraq “strategy”? Never know. Anything can happen in The Twilight Zone.

ARE THE OIL & GAS LOBBIES AT THE ROUTE OF THE GLOBAL WARMING MIS-INFORMATION CAMPAIGN?

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 24, 2007

ARE THE OIL & GAS LOBBIES AT THE ROUTE OF THE GLOBAL WARMING MIS-INFORMATION CAMPAIGN? – by Catherine Morgan

I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately, about the fact that there is so much “mis-information” on the web and elsewhere about Global Warming. Even with so much evidence to the fact that we are contributing greatly to this problem ”Someone” wants us to believe otherwise. I would suggest the “someone” may be the the “companies” that are profiting from our continuing to ignore this problem. (ie: THE OIL & GAS LOBBIES) These are very big, very well financed, and very motivated lobbies.

I would liken this to the cigarette lobby, who for nearly forty years attempted to produce “scientific” facts that smoking wasn’t bad for you. Simply to promote their own agenda, they falsified research to “mis-inform” the public. Now, think about the all powerful OIL AND GAS LOBBY. Much larger, better financed, and more powerful than the cigarette lobby. The Oil and Gas Industry has contributed over 179.8 MILLION dollars to federal candidates and political parties (74% going to the Republican Party). So we should not be surprised one bit at the length this multi-billion, dollar industry is willing to go in order to protect their bottom-line. They report to their share holders ONLY. As long as these industries have the money. As long as they can control the government (especially a Republican controlled government). You can be very certain that this “mis-information” campaign will continue on and on. We as the voting public, and the consuming public, are going to have to be the ones to finally say…ENOUGH. When we do this, we will be looking at the “evidence” that is being produced by scientists and people that are NOT profiting from the very industries that are contributing to this problem. Much like when we finally had to admit that “Yes…cigarettes DO cause cancer”. How many people had to die before the “mis-information” being put out by the cigarette lobby, was finally “ignored” by the government and the public??? I would say too many. We are now looking at a greater problem, with a greater and more powerful lobby. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT WE ARE IN MUCH GREATER TROUBLE.
– I decided to write this post after getting several responces to an earlier post on global warming where many comments seemed to indicate a belief that global warming is a “hoax”. I am including in this post, another response that I think also goes a great way to explain the subject of “mis-information” as it relates to global warming.

ADDITIONAL POST WITH MANY LINKS TO GET MORE INFORMATION ON GLOBAL WARMING.

THIS IS FROM http://tamino.wordpress.com/ — (also has a great site to check out for more information on global warming and other interesting topics) “tamino” wrote: I’m a natural-born skeptic. I’m also a scientist. So I was mildly interested in, and skeptical of, global warming for a long time.

A few years ago I heard of a paper on the subject of global warming published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal by two Harvard astronomers, one of whom was a “colleague of a colleague.” This piqued my interest, so I read the paper. This further piqued my interest; to make a long story short, I’ve spent the last few years studying the scientific literature in depth on this issue. Global warming is real. It’s dangerous. It’s caused by human activity.

I can also tell you that I too am “old enough to have seen first hand these doom and gloom stories,” and this one really is different. Past doom-and-gloom warnings of scientific topics came from a single, or a handful, of scientific research teams, with the mainstream urging caution (but caution rarely gets reported in the press!), and their false alarms fizzled out quickly as new scientific evidence emerged. The global warming warnings come from the vast majority of climate scientists, in fact the concensus is frighteningly close to unanimity. Furthermore, since the alarm was first raised nearly 20 years ago, a vast array of new evidence has emerged, and rather than defusing concern, it has made the scientific case so strong that only those in denial fail to see that the danger is so real, we would be fools to ignore it.

Urging readers to seek out more detailed information is sound advice. But urging them to seek only websites found by searching for “global warming hoax” or “global warming fiasco” will turn up mostly the warped misinformation, often crafted with extreme cleverness, which literally floods the web, as denialist forces have taken to the internet to spread doubt.

I’m sure you’ve spent at least “a couple of hours expanding your mind.” I’ve spent years studying the scientific literature, and that’s after all the years I spent becoming and working as a scientist in the first place, to acquire the background knowledge necessary to appreciate some of the subtleties involved. Perhaps you’ll understand that a couple of hours perusing websites run by denialists is a pathetic reason to doubt, when faced with the combined efforts of thousands of scientists over decades.

To all readers: spend more than just a couple of hours researching the science, and don’t get your information from what turns up in a google search for “global warming hoax.” Those who create most such sites are either abominably naive, or outright liars.

The Deadliest Day for U.S. Forces In Two Years

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 22, 2007

DEADLIEST DAY FOR U.S. FORCES IN TWO YEARS — by Catherine Morgan

If the war in Iraq wasn’t already bad enough, Saturday marked the deadliest day in two years for the U.S. troops. Our armed forces had twenty deaths in military action just yesterday, thirteen of the deaths came from a black-hawk helicopter crash. That brings the U.S. death toll to 3,052, that is three thousand and fifty-two U.S. men and women killed fighting in another country’s civil war.

I really don’t know what else to say. It just makes me very sad. I wish I could say that I know just what we should do to get ourselves out of this mess, but I don’t even have an opinion on what we could do…..Which if you knew me you would know that it is very infrequent that I “don’t” have an opinion. It’s not so much that I don’t have an opinion, of course I have an opinion on the war, it’s just I don’t have any opinion on what in the world we could do to get us out of this horrible war. The only thing I know for sure is that too many people have died……And I want it to STOP!

I will say, that when it comes to war in general…..I just wish the whole world would just STOP IT! It seems to me that maybe the best way to handle these types of conflicts in the future would be to just have the disputing countries’ administrations, (ie: presidents, and their councils) go at it with guns and knifes, until the only people left in the world would be the ones who are willing to find peaceful solutions to worldly problems. Well, that will never happen. I guess the point I am trying to make is….If the people making the decisions to go to war actually had to fight the war themselves, seems to me there wouldn’t be so many wars.

What do you think?

Is The United States Ready For A Woman President?

IS THE UNITED STATES READY FOR A WOMEN PRESIDENT? — by Catherine Morgan

As a woman, I want to believe that answer to this question is yes. As an objective observer, I have to wonder. In reading comments on other forums, and listening to the commentary on news programs….There seems to be a lot of hate Hillary banter going on. I don’t have a problem with anyone who dislikes a politician based on their abilities to do the job or their qualifications. However, most of what I have been hearing has less to do with her qualifications, and more to do with her being a woman. Quite frankly, I take offense to it.

I wouldn’t consider myself pro-Hillary. At this point, I still want to wait and hear debates and get more facts before I commit to one opinion or another. But one opinion I am ready to commit to is…My lack of faith in the general voting public to vote for a candidate that is best qualified for the job. When did we start caring more about whether we would want to have a beer with the candidate, then whether the candidate has an ounce of common sense? Am I the only one who just doesn’t get it?

I think, if we don’t get our “collective” acts together for this next election…And actually elect a candidate based on his or her qualifications and not their likability - This country is going to be in an even bigger mess than we are now. The truth is, we need more than just a good president, we are really going to need a miracle worker. I just wonder if we as voters are going to be up to the task, and get passed our “American Idol” voting mentality. But, I sure hope we can.

So…Are we ready for a woman president? I would like to know what you think. I know I am ready. If Hillary can prove herself as the best candidate, I will surely vote for her. And if she wins, it will be one small step for women, and one giant leap for America. I for one would be proud to see a woman as the President of the United States of America.

Food for thought: What if both the Republican and Democratic Parties ended up with women as their candidate for the Presidency??? That’s a mind blower??? May the best woman win????

Well, tell me what you think…After-all, that’s what this blog is all about.

Is Global Warming Really That Big Of A Problem?

Posted by Catherine Morgan on January 19, 2007

Global Warming

IS GLOBAL WARMING REALLY THAT BIG OF A PROBLEM? — by Catherine Morgan

Is anyone concerned that, the year 2006 has gone on record as being the warmest year in United States history in the past 112 years? That’s a lot of years. Or, that when experts look at the global temperatures they find that each year since 1993 the temperatures have been in the top 20 of the warmest years on record?

All the experts are saying that we need to start fighting global warming now. So, why aren’t we? I have a theory. Aside from all the economical and political problems that would arise in taking real steps to combat this problem, and that list is long…..The real stumbling block is the name. Our ears just don’t hear words like “warming” any more, “warming” actually sounds kind of “soothing” doesn’t it? Please don’t get me wrong, I am not making light of the gravity of this problem. But the sad truth is that we are now living in what I would call; “the age of extreme”, and most importantly “the age of fear”. Every minute, every day we are being bombarded with; “BREAKING NEWS”, “TERRORISTS THREAT WARNINGS”, “DEADLY PANDEMICS”, you know what I mean. We are surrounded by so much grief, doom, and sadness that are ears have become immune. So, global warming might as just as well be called a boo-boo in the atmosphere.

In all fairness, it’s not our fault. For most of us this immunity has become our survival mechanism. Let’s face it, you can’t really watch the news these days and actually allow yourself to be affected by it. If you did, you would be in a constant state of panic and despair.

The government uses this immunity to their benefit. They would like us to continue to not worry about the whole global warming thing. It’s better for them if we keep thinking it’s just a little boo-boo, and we don’t have to worry about it right now. That’s because, if they admit the problem, they will need to fix it….and by fixing it they will be throwing a real monkey wrench into our governments’ political comfort zone.

Everyone knows that the only real solution to the global warming problem is to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. We can only reduce these emissions if our government makes this problem a priority. I think….As long as we are only suffering from “global warming“, our government will continue to treat this problem as a “boo-boo“. Once this “boo-boo” turns into a “gaping, hemorrhaging, war on our planet“, and of course the Bush administration is no longer in office, we might actually see a real effort to combat this devastating and very serious problem. Until then, we might want to consider renaming “global warming” to something a little less innocuous .

Let me know what you think.

What do you think about Stem Cell Research? - by Catherine MorganIt seems to me that the idea of whether or not life begins at the pre-embryo or “zygote” shouldn’t be the main issue. Let’s just say for arguments sake, that it does. If we are saying that the “zygote” is just as much of a life as any other life, and that by using it for scientific research it is essentially “killing” that potential life, then that should be the main issue. For that reason, the public should be up-in-arms over the destruction of these “zygotes”. Why is it o.k. to just dispose of this potential life? Shouldn’t that be the main issue?

The stem cells that are taken from these “zygotes” are what is needed for the research that could very well save millions of lives in the future. So, if the choice is between destroying stem cells or using them to help save a life….It seems a “no-brain-er” to me that possibly saving someones life would be a more virtuous use of these cells then just tossing them out in the trash. It seems that it’s the “right to life” people that are most against stem cell research, but why then do they seem to think there is no problem with throwing out the “life” in a dumpster. That’s confusing to me.

I guess as a nurse I look at this situation a bit differently. When a family is faced with the loss of a child due to an accident of some sort, they are given the opportunity to “donate” any viable organs, tissue, or cells. Another words; it’s their choice, the family decides. Wouldn’t it be unconscionable if the government started stepping in and deciding what these families should do? Stem cell research is really the same thing in many ways. The families that used in-vitro fertilization to have their children should be the ones to decide what is done with any “left-over” stem cells. These cells are part of them and belong to them, not the government, not the scientists, not anyone else. Therefor, any decision on what should be done with these cells, should be made by the people that those cell actually belong to. The best way to do this would be much like when we state on our drivers licence that we are “organ donors”; the families that have used in-vitro fertilization should state on legal documents what they would like done with any “left over” embryos. As long as we allow in-vitro fertilization, the government and the public needs to step aside and let the families decide what they will do when these situations arise. We don’t tell them what to do when a child is conceived from this process, these children don’t belong to the government then, so why should they belong to the government before conception?

This is just how I feel. I know it is a controversial subject. I just wanted to point out that there was a time, not too long ago, when the government and the public questioned whether organ donation itself should be allowed….and now, look how many lives it saves.

Questioning and debate are always a good thing, just as long as we don’t become paralized with the inability to see certain subjects in more than one light. In this case, wouldn’t the most logical outcome be that the family decide if they want to donate these cells to science, or donate them to another couple, or have them discarded? It seems this could solve a lot of the controversy. And, not to point out the obvious; but this is really one of those “wedge” issues that the politicians use to manipulate the way we vote and divert our attention away from other important issues that the government really should be focusing on. I can think of a lot of other ways the government could contribute to saving human life, especially if they focus on the lives that are actually living.

I would love to know what others think on this “hot button” issue. But, if you comment, please do it in a way that is respectful and without harsh and angry words. Like I said before; I think the debate is important….but when you use words to just “shut-up” the other side….no side benefits.
